Update on Meeting with Senator Taniguchi

Here is the update Rose Woods posted about her meeting with Senator Taniguchi.В  He is the chair of the committee the bill was assigned to.

Good news everyone, today I was able to get an appointment with Senator Taniguchi (which is hard to do per Ewa house rep Kim Pine).

I arrived at 3:10 and he saw me at 3:12.

I walked in first and Albert (my husband) after me. We introduced ourselves and before we could sit down Mr. Taniguchi said, “I just want you to know that I am leaning to not hearing the bill. I have received numerous emails from people who don’t want it.”

This was a good start so I thanked him. But I said that as a bully community we wanted him to know that we will show out strong until the bill is squashed. And also that we want the legislature to know how many people oppose any bills for breed specific legislation now or in the future.

I provided him with the names of everyone we took last night as well as those of you who phoned and texted before the meeting.

I also read some of the statistics on BSL that Lindsey and Geri gave me. Impressing on him the extensive cost and ineffectiveness of BSL in other states.

I informed him that the Hawaii Veterinary Medical Association supports us and is against BSL. And he added “and the humane society too” because he saw this mornings paper.

I told him that we will be rallying on all islands.

I told him that Big Island, Molokai, Maui, Kauai and Oahu will be calling, emailing, faxing our opposition to senate bill #79 and senate bill #488 and that we will be watching closely at the other dog/animal related bills. He was not aware of the others so I showed him.

I talked to him about senate bill # 488-animal cruelty. I expressed to him that the bully community and the dog public in general have a stake in the wording of the animal cruelty definitions as it pertains to the sport of dog pulling.

I expressed to him that we want senate bill #488 to be amended to protect our sport of dog pulling in hawaii. I mentioned that when we train and pull our dogs, some people feel they look overworked or overdriven, however they are not being cruely treated! I also reminded him that Alaskan huskies pull a sled with people and sometimes supplies for long distances.

I also mentioned to him that i am a USPS mail carrier and that I am in the process of obtaining statistics on mail carrier dog bites. As a mail carrier, I told him that I have never heard carriers say that pitbulls are the most vicious dogs. Senator Taniguchi said “You’re right, because when I campaigned for election door to door, I got bit by a dog and it wasn’t a pitbull.”

Senator Taniguchi then informed me that he received news earlier from another legislative office that there had been a bite incident on the leeward side. He mentioned and said it may be something we may have to deal with.

All in all if he follows through with not hearing the bill senate bill 79 gets squashed.
