Senate Bill 79 in The Maui News paper
This was in the letters to the editor section of The Maui News.
The problem is not the breed of dog, but lack of understanding and care
VIEWPOINT LORI SPAGNA
Let’s get to the truth behind Senate Bill 79, which would make owning, possessing or selling “pit bulls” a misdemeanor offense, and impoundment and forfeiture would be authorized. This could mean that pit bull owners who truly love and care for their dogs would be legally forced to surrender their pets or receive misdemeanor offenses.
SB79 is pure dog racism.

Things to keep in mind…
Please remember that Senator Colleen Hanabusa introduced this bill because it was part of her job.В A person in the community she represents wanted this legislation and as the representative for the Leeward area, it was her job to present this bill on behalf of that citizen.
Also, there is a lot of confusing and conflicting information about what a “pitbull” is.В The American Pit Bull Terrier is it’s own distinct breed by United Kennel Club standards.В The American Kennel Club, on the other hand, does not recognize the American Pit Bull Terrier as a breed and only registers American Staffordshire Terriers.В Most UKC APBT owners will tell you that some of their dogs have AKC Am Staffs in their pedigree.
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is yet another breed recognized by both the UKC and AKC.В All of these breeds are specifically named in the bill.В But don’t forget that the bill also makes room for ANY dog displaying the majority of physical traits of anyone or more of those breeds, OR any dog exhibiting those distinguishing characteristics which substantially conform to the standards established by the American Kennel Club or United Kennel Club for any of those breeds.

I really think this is unfair. It’s like being back in egypt when pharoah ordered all of the first born sons to be killed because he was afraid of losing his kingdom. We in Hawaii are well know for our mixed culture and diversity. By looking at this bill it shows racism, discrimination, injust and just plain old stupidity and selfishness. I for one have never been attacked chased or even barked at by a pitbull. However I wish I could say the same for chihuahuas and pomeranians. I recall having some rather close encounters with those animals and guess where in store parking lots where their owners bring them and leave them in the cars with the windows down so that they can nip at people. When you confront the owners their reply is “Oh he wouldn’t hurt a fly” yah right!!
