Plans for Pet Awareness Day in Hawaii

Ewa Representative Kim Pine suggested and has plans to present a Pet Awareness Day Resolution to Governor Lingle.В  The idea of Pet Awareness Day is to educate the public and ALL pet owners on the laws pertaining to pet ownership and care.В  It’s also aimed at getting all pet owners fully equipped with the knowledge and information they need to give their pets the best life possible and reduce the chances situations that are harmful to the animals, their families, and/or to the general public.

Within the week a task force will be formed to help organize and make Pet Awareness Day a reality, not only for this year, but on an ongoing basis.В  If you are interested in helping to spearhead this cause, please contact Rose Woods at petawarenessday [at] hawaii.rr.com. Owner Awareness and Education

Another project that is just beginning is the compilation of a Code of Ethics, Laws pertaining to animal ownership, and other important information for all dog and animal owners.В  These documents will all be put together in an informational packet that all animal owners can use.В  All breeders, pet stores, and anyone else who sells animals will be encouraged to give these out to any new owners they sell/give animals to to promote responsible ownership statewide.

Once this information packet is put together, we will try to get a downloadable version up on this site for you.

Here is the update from Rose about Pet Awareness Day:
Aloha Everyone, its Rose. If you haven’t already heard, here is an update…

EARLY this morning, my classmate Ewa State Rep Kim Pine called me to discuss the dog bite incidents yesterday and to offer her help. Thank You Jesus for answered prayer.

She and I talked at length, tossed around and went back and forth on some ideas until Kim came up with

“PET AWARENESS AND SAFETY DAY”

Kim is going to introduce a resolution for a Pet Awareness and Safety Day to Governer Lingle.

This is an exciting opportunity for the Bully Community to show that we are serious about NO BSL EVER in Hawaii as well as be a part of an effective, economical, and practical solution to minimize if not stop dog bite incidents in Hawaii.

I am putting together a Task Force to orgazine the Pet Awareness and Safety Day Resolution.
The Task Force would be most effective if we had a few key leaders from the following organizations:

  • American Kennel Club
  • United Kennel Club
  • American Bully Kennel Club
  • Hawaii Humane Society
  • Hawaii Vetrinary Society
  • The Hawaii Consumer Agency
  • 4H

The goal is to put together a “Pet Owners Packet” which would include a Code of Ethics (thanks Julz), current Hawaii state Laws on animals, a contract for pet owners to sign which states they accept responsibility for the care of their animal(s) and its behavior. In addition to that we also want to provide information on what to do if you are no longer able to care for your animals-who to call where to go without fearing you will be in trouble.

The “Pet Owner’s Packet” would be available to all breeders as well as any person(s) or companies that sell animals so that they can give it to new pet owners who buy from them.

In addition I am also hoping the “Pet Awareness and Safety Day” will receive sponsorship from large stores or pet product manufacturers in order for it to be a successful annual(yearly) event.

If you are interested in being on the task force or have information that can help us please contact me (Rose) via email at petawarenessday [at] hawaii.rr.com
