Animal Cruelty Bill SB488

This is another dog related bill that was introduced in January 2009. SB488 is related to animal cruelty. The reason some dog owners are concerned about this bill is because of how it may affect the sport of dog pulling. There is a possibility that this bill may affect training of dogs for dog pulling.

This bill is described as:

Prohibits the tethering or restraining of companion animals unless certain circumstances exist.

However, it talks about overloading or overdriving a dog intentionally and dog pullers are concerned that others outside the sport may view their training as such.

Been introduced - Jan. 23
Passed first reading - Jan. 26
Been referred to JGO - Jan. 28
Been scheduled for public hearing - Feb. 9
Had public hearing on Feb. 13 at 9:30am

New Bill Introduced to Address Dangerous Dogs

On January 28th, 2009 a new bill was introduced to address the dangerous dog situation in Hawaii. Unlike SB79, this bill SB1176, does not target specific breeds.

Instead this bill…

Prohibits the owner of a dangerous dog from allowing the dog to roam freely without supervision. Authorizes an animal control officer to investigate complaints regarding dangerous dogs, to pick up freely roaming dangerous dogs, and to issue citations. Establishes penalties for owners who fail to adequately supervise dangerous dogs. Requires owners of dangerous dogs to obtain liability insurance if the dog is found to be inadequately supervised.

SB1176 was introduced on January 28th. Passed first reading on January 28th. On February 9th, this bill was scheduled for a public hearing to take place on February 13th at 9:30am.

Sign Waving at Queen K Highway by the Mormon temple side under the tree. We’ll be gathering at the same place for those of you that came last time. 12:00-4:00 pm.

February 15th - Sunday

Kauai - Kauai Community College
Sign Waving on Sunday Feb 15th from 10am - 12pm

Many have been asking for a place to sign the petition online since they haven’t been make it out to the events. There are actually a couple that have been started, so we’ll put the links up here. We are also trying to upload a petition you can print out and get signatures on as well.

This I just found out about and has not been previously mentioned, but there will be sign waving in Kona TODAY!

Sorry such short notice guys but I just wanted to let anybody know that there will be a sign waving in Kona today.

Today is also Maui’s rally.
