What’s SB79?

Hawaii SB79, which passed it’s first reading on January 23, 2009, aims to prohibit ownership, possession, or sale of pit bulls.

But this isn’t just about pit bulls!!!

According to SB79, “pitbull means any dog that is an American pit bull terrier, American staffordshire terrier,a staffordshire bull terrier, or any dog displaying the majority of physical traits of anyone or more of those breeds, or any dog exhibiting those distinguishing characteristics which substantially conform to the standards established by the American Kennel Club or United Kennel Club for any of those breeds.”

Under this bill, owning, possessing , or selling “pit bulls” as defined above would be a misdemeanor offense and impoundment and forfeiture would be authorized.

“Owning, possessing, or selling a pit bull is a misdemeanor.”

If you are against punishing dogs because of the way they look and are in favor if stopping Breed Specific Legislation, please join us in raising awareness and preventing this bill from progressing and becoming law in the State of Hawaii. Even if you don’t own one of the breeds mentioned above, once a ban is in place based on breed alone, it leaves the door open for bans on other breeds as well.
